Lynx Defeat Rust 21-5

The Rhodes College baseball team defeated Rust College at Bearcat Field in Holly Springs, MS this afternoon 21-5 behind their strongest offensive performance of the season pounding out 25 hits, 7 of which went for extra bases.  Freshman CF Travis Perkins hit his first collegiate homerun, a grand slam in the top of the sixth.  Red-shirt freshman Brian Lainoff picked up his second victory of the season, he is now 2-0 on the year, as the Lynx improve to 17-10 on the year.

Red-shirt freshman Brian Lainoff worked the first 4 innings en route to his second victory of the season.  Lainoff scattered 6 hits, allowed 2 earned runs, walked 3 and struck out 2.  Sophomore Andy Meier then worked the fifth and sixth, striking out 3.  This was Meier's first appearance on the mound this season.  Sophomore Jhonny Utt finished out the ballgame in the seventh before the mercy rule was enacted.

The Lynx offense was paced by freshman CF Travis Perkins who was 3-5 on the day with a grand slam, scored twice, drove in 5, and got hit by a pitch.  Senior SS J.R. Bizzell was 3-5 on the day with 2 RBIs and scored a run.  Sophomore RF Brent Lindsey was a double shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-4 at the plate with a homerun, triple, scored twice and drove in 4.  Junior 2B Brooks Royer was 4-6 with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, and scored twice. 

Rhodes returns to action this weekend with a conference series against Centre College.  First pitch is set for 12:00 on Saturday and Sunday.
